Over the past number of weeks we have been reporting on the tragic story of little Jake Brennan, the six-year-old boy who died in a road accident in Kilkenny last year.

Jake’s devastated mum Roseann spearheaded a campaign calling upon the government to introduce a speed limit of 20 km/h for built-up residential areas, carrying out a protest outside the Dáil for her cause.

While it looked as though the family had succeeded with their campaign, however, devastated Roseann has revealed her disappointment and frustration that such provisions have not come to pass.

Transport Minister Paschal Donoghue has issued new guidelines on speed limits, but these include a 30 km/h limit in slow zones in urban areas, and new national limits of 80km/h on narrow rural roads.

Commenting on the disappointing turn of events, Roseann said: “I feel Paschal Donoghue trampled on my baby’s legacy – he said one word and meant another.”

A spokeswoman for the Minister had said at the time: “The Minister is not opposed, in principle, to the application of 20 km/h speed limits in residential areas.”

This must be very disappointing indeed for the Brennan family. They continue to stay in our thoughts and prayers.
