We previously reported on the story of Roseann Brennan, the heartbroken mother of Jake, the six-year-old who lost his life when he was knocked down by a car on an estate last year.

Roseann began her three-day vigil outside Leinster House this week, in a bid to get the Government to consider Jake’s Law, which would introduce speed limits in housing estates.

In a move which will bring some comfort to the Brennan family, it is being reported this evening that the Government have accepted Jake’s Law in principle and will make moves towards including it in the upcoming Road Traffic Bill.

The good news was delivered to Roseann this evening by the Minister for Transport, Pascal Donohoe.

A spokeswoman stated: “The Minister is not opposed, in principle, to the application of 20km/h speed limits in residential areas, where it is appropriate.”

She added that the Minister will seek further advice on the practicalities of the measure before committing it to the Bill’s provisions.

It is welcome news for Roseann and her family, who spent two nights camped outside the gates of Government buildings, receiving support from members of the public and Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald.

We hope that the Brennan family will find some comfort from this latest news, and that the measure will be brought into full effect.
