It's usually when you're operating on a tight schedule that things go wrong for you on public transport, but there are instances where the spirit of compassion can prevail.

This is something that Arizona woman Marcia Short learned over Christmas, when two pilots delayed their plane's takeoff to allow her and her family make it to her husband's funeral.

As Marcia doesn't have Facebook, she called on daughter Nicole to share their story and a message of thanks to Delta Airlines pilots Adams and Anderson.

In the post, Marcia explained how her husband had died of lung cancer at the age of 56, on December 16. They had been married for 32 years and had three children together.

With the funeral set to take place in her husband's native Tennessee, Marcia and her three children had a long journey ahead of them. Things took a turn for the worst, however, when their connecting flight was heavily delayed.

With only seven minutes to make it to the flight for the funeral in Tennessee, Marcia and her children ran to the gate, reaching it only two minutes before takeoff. The mourning family cried, waved and shouted for the plane to wait for them, and were left dejected when it began to pull away from the bridge.

When an attendant reached the gate however, something amazing happened - the phone rang with a message from the pilots: they had seen the distraught family, and had decided to wait for them to board.

As you can imagine, this simple gesture meant the world to a family who just wanted to say goodbye to their loved one.

"Pilots Adams and Anderson of flight DL3955 on December 19th, 2015 from MPLS-St Paul to Memphis Delta Airlines have blessed my family, and gave us a gift that no one else could. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, and may you both be blessed tenfold," wrote Marcia.
