Fans of chat show host and comedian Jimmy Kimmel will no doubt be aware of his ‘Celebrities Read Mean Tweets’ video series, in which famous faces sit down in front of the camera and share some of the meanest messages they have ever received on social media.

While the audience’s laughter and the celebrities’ reactions, be it deadpan or sassy, puts a humorous spin on the situation, a new video has highlighted just how damaging these interactions can be on our young people.

Following the pattern of Jimmy Kimmel’s now infamous videos, The Canadian Safe School Network got some regular teens to sit down for the camera and read out some of their own mean tweets, as part of an anti-bullying campaign.

When it’s a young person at the other end of that camera lens, and the laughter ends, a mean tweet isn’t such an amusing or harmless thing. In fact, it makes for some very uncomfortable viewing.

In an age where communication is instant, this video will really make you think, and it underlines why we need to be so aware of cyberbullying and how to deal with it.
