We have all been warned about the importance of wearing a seat belt, and a picture to emerge from the US shows exactly why we should never drive without being properly secured.

Yesterday morning (US time), a car carrying two adults and four children overturned and rolled down a hill killing one and injuring the other passengers, and police believe no one was secured properly.

The incident happened in Brighton, Colorado after one of the SUV’s tyres blew causing the driver to lose control of the car.

According to police, a man was killed in the tragic accident while a woman and child were rushed to hospital. Three other children were also involved but, thankfully, were not seriously hurt.

However, a photo which was taken by a passerby has shown the true heartbreaking reality of the incident.

Taken by Jessica Matrious, who was travelling behind the vehicle when it crashed, it shows a police officer cradling a child in an apparent attempt to distract the youngster from the scene behind.

Explaining what she saw happen, Jessica said: “They took an extreme sharp right turn and just immediately started to roll. I pulled over, obviously, and started running to the field to see what I could do.”

"It's so horrible to see something like that happen, especially because it could have been prevented. If the father was wearing a seatbelt, then he'd still be here,” she added.

Our thoughts are with the family at this tragic time.
