As the festive excitement sets in today, spare a thought and a prayer for the family involved in the following report.

A five-year-old boy died in his native Los Angeles on Wednesday night, after a driver crashed her car into his family’s ground-floor apartment.

According to CBS, the little boy was asleep on the couch with his mother and father when the vehicle burst through the wall.

The father is said to have jumped in front of his son in a bid to save him, with the pair both ending up pinned beneath the vehicle.

The family-of-three and two other young girls were rushed to hospital for treatment but, sadly, the five-year-old boy passed away. The status of the other five patients is not yet known.

The driver, a female 24-year-old, has reportedly been arrested for driving under the influence. She claims that an oncoming driver cut her off in the road, causing her to swerve and strike the wall.

A heartbreaking update to the story today revealed that, while scouring the tragic scene, police officers discovered a letter written by the deceased little boy, asking Santa for a bicycle.

Our hearts go out to all those affected by this tragedy.
