The homeless crisis in Ireland has been receiving a lot of headline space in recent times, but this latest report provides damning proof that decisive action needs to be taken for once and for all.

According to a report in today’s Herald, six pregnant women have been forced to sleep rough on the streets of Dublin City this week.

In an interview with the paper, Councillor Christy Burke explained how the Inner City Helping the Homeless (ICHH) outreach team met the women on Thursday night during their food and clothing run.

“It’s beyond comprehension that a woman would be allowed to sleep rough when she is carrying a child. What happens if there is a threat to her life, or she picks up an infection,” Councillor Burke said.

Branding the situation as “totally unacceptable”, he urged the Irish Government to act, insisting: “Something needs to be done now.”

This shocking story comes just a day after it was reported that, due to the credit limit on Dublin City Council’s Central Placement Service being maxed out this week, a family was forced to spend the night in an industrial estate.

Let’s hope that this is the wake-up call the government needs to kick into gear.
