How do I remove yellow stains from my nails?

Yellow nails are far from pretty, but however unsightly they are not usually anything to worry about. In this article we will look at what causes them and how you can avoid them.

Why do our nails go yellow?
Nails can often become stained by dark red, purple and black nail polishes. Even after these colours are removed, a yellow colour can remain. This becomes more likely the longer the nail polish was on the nail.

Staining can also occur from lighter colour polishes, so it is recommended to change your polish every week or two. Applying a base coat first to protect your nails is also a good idea.

If the staining is very bad, a nail technician should be able to help by buffing it off. In the long term however, the buffing may weaken your nails, so this should not be something you get done frequently. Overall though, there is nothing to be too concerned about as if you can just be patient, the yellow hue will eventually grow out.

A fungus infection can turn nails yellow. Usually only a few nails are affected and not all the nails. If you think you have a fungal infection, consult a dermatologist who will do a simple test and then diagnose treatment if you need it.

Psoriasis of the nails is a noncontagious condition that can result in yellow-brown discoloured nails. The change in colour to the nails is often accompanied by other nail changes, such as the lifting of the nail plate. Again, if you experience these symptoms, seek assistance from a doctor.

Smoking can cause yellow fingernails. If you smoke and have yellow nails and don’t suffer from any of the conditions discussed above, there is a good chance that your smoking is the cause of your yellow fingernails. The ideal solution for both your nails and your general health would be to quit smoking. Alternatively, you can soak your nails in fresh lemon juice as this has a soft bleaching effect and may remove the yellow hue.

Your fingernails can reflect your habits and the way you care for yourself on a daily basis. Looking after your nails and doing all you can to keep them clear and healthy looking is recommended at all times.
