In times of disaster and devastation, it’s important to focus in on the little sparks of hope that can flourish – and that is exactly what the world’s media have been doing, in the wake of this week’s earthquake in Japan.

Incredible footage has emerged showing rescue workers pulling an eight-month-old girl from the rubble of a building demolished in the magnitude 6 ‘quake.

The earthquake rocked the city of Kumamoto, killing at least nine people and leaving hundreds injured. There have been wide-scale evacuations all over the city, with a reported 44,000 people seeking shelter from aftershocks.

While the fate of this baby girl’s family is unknown, she is said to have been placed in an awaiting ambulance and brought to hospital for treatment immediately after this video was taken.

Speaking to local media last night, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said: “We will do our utmost and carry on with life-saving and rescue operations throughout the night.”

We are so relieved to see that this little one was able to be saved, and we’re thinking of all those affected by the disaster.
