According to police reports, the three-year-old child at the centre of the incident inadvertently shot the younger child upon discovering the unattended firearm.
Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams commented on the devastating incident, saying: "It's a sad day for Cleveland. This fascination that we have with handguns, not just in this city but in this country, has to stop."
The deceased child's mother, who is believed to have lived in the house with at least three children, was heard screaming in the grounds of the home upon learning of the incident.
Summing up the tragedy while speaking to reporters, Police Chief Calvin Williams said: "This is a senseless loss of life."
The one-year-old child was pronounced dead in hospital.
