If we needed any further proof that dogs really are man’s best friend, the story of Juan Heriberto Trevino and Max the Labrador will seal it for you.

The dog has made headlines around the world this week, after being credited with keeping 14-year-old Juan alive for 44 hours in the Mexican wilderness.

According to a report by The Dodo, Juan was hiking with a group from his summer camp when he fell down a ravine while looking for firewood. Alone and injured, Juan had no idea how he was going to get the word out to his campmates.

Thankfully for Juan, however, his group had a tail as they made their way to the Sierra Madre Oriental Mountains.

Max, a gorgeous Labrador living close to the camp with his owners, had followed the group on their expedition. When Juan fell, Max followed him down the ravine and came to his rescue.

Not only did the dog stay with Juan throughout his two-day ordeal, but he also cuddled up to him for warmth during the nights and even located a puddle for them to drink from when extreme thirst kicked in.

Eventually, a search-and-rescue party located Juan and airlifted him to safety.

Police have since credited loyal Max with keeping Juan alive.

A local police rep said: “In that part of the mountain it is very easy to get lost. In addition, it’s very cold at night, as it is very high. The child was lucky to find the dog.”
