An investigation has been launched into the deaths of two babies at Cavan General Hospital in the past week.

The first baby died unexpectedly in less than 24 hours after being born with no explanation as to why.

The second baby died early Sunday morning after problems during labour.

An emergency Caesarean section was needed as the baby’s condition worsened but the baby died before delivery.

The investigation in this case is focused on the length of time it took for a consultant obstetrician to be called.

At the time there was only a hospital doctor present however, they are not authorised to perform and emergency section without the presence of a consultant.

Chief of operations officer of RCSI Hospital group, Sheila McGuiness said:

“It is not the policy of Cavan General Hospital to comment on individual cases or individual employees.”

In the case of a death of a newborn, an investigation must be done to determine whether it could have been prevented or is safety lessons could be learned from that case.

Cavan General Hospital is one of the smallest maternity units in the country and has had multiple investigations into baby death in the last few years.

The hospital commented last year after these investigations saying they were satisfied with the safety standards of the maternity service and assured the public they compared well to other units across the country.
