Dr. Niall Muldoon has been announced as the new Ombudsman for Children.

Almost 100 applications were submitted for the post, but registered clinical and counselling psychologist Dr. Muldoon was chosen for the position by the Public Appointments Service.

Pending approval from the Oireachtas, Dr. Muldoon who is currently the Director of Investigations at the Ombudsman for Children's Office, will be formally appointed by President Higgins.

Dr. Muldoon has worked in the area of child protection since the 1990s and will be replacing Emily Logan.

Commenting on the interest shown in the position, Children's Minister James Reilly said: "I am encouraged by the significant interest in the post of Ombudsman for Children. It is an integral part of an enhanced architecture in this State devoted to improving the lives of our children and young people."
