An Irish couple have been handed down a year-long suspended prison sentence for allegedly abandoning their son while on holiday in Majorca.

The as yet unnamed pair were detained at Palma Airport today after attempting to leave the country without their 17-year-old son, who suffers with mental illness.

Sources claim that the teen became separated from his parents during an outing on the final day of their holiday together. But rather than searching for their child, the parents are said to have packed their suitcases and headed to the airport with their other three children.

While the couple did report their son as missing, it is believed that they didn’t want to miss their flight home. It is also not yet known whether the family informed the authorities that they were heading home before embarking on their journey.

The parents were detained by airport security after insisting on trying to board the flight. Eye witnesses claim that they wanted to leave their son’s case in the hands of the local detectives.

The couple appeared in court while their other three children were placed in a child welfare centre, and they were handed down a suspended sentence by the judge.

Thankfully, detectives were able to locate the teenager, who was reunited with the family. While the family are reported to have flown home, their current whereabouts are not known.
