According to recent figures released by Eurostat, Irish women are older than most other European women when they become mothers for the first time.

While the majority of women in the EU are in their twenties when they become a first-time mum, Irish women tend to be in their thirties.

In addition to these findings, it has been established that Ireland has a higher than average number of women becoming first-time mums after their fortieth birthday.

It was established that our nation's families are also larger than the EU average with 18% of Irish families in 2013 reporting the birth of a third child which compares to 12% in the EU.

Eurostat also confirmed that Ireland has a low teenage pregnancy rate when compared to other countries in the European Union.
