Messages of love and support have come flooding in for US mum Carrie DeKlyen this week, after it emerged that she refused cancer treatment – so she could save her unborn child’s life.

Carrie, who is a mum-of-five, was diagnosed with terminal cancer in April of this year. Initially, she intended to try out a clinical treatment trial, but another bombshell made this impossible – she was pregnant.

Carrie had had no idea that she was expecting. When she was told that she would have to terminate her pregnancy in order to undergo the treatment, however, she was resolute: she was not going to give up her baby.

So, Carrie made the decision to forgo treatment and carry her baby daughter – who has been named Life – in the hopes that she will be able to deliver her safe and sound.

Carrie’s condition has deteriorated significantly as time has gone on, and she is currently on life support and ‘in a vegetative state’.

At 21 weeks pregnant, doctors at the University of Michigan are trying to keep Carrie alive long enough to deliver Baby Life.

The entire DeKlyen family has rallied around the brave mother, and a GoFundMe page (link here) has been set up to raise money for husband Nick and their children; 18-year-old Elijah, 16-year-old Isaiah, 11-year-old Neveah, four-year-old Leila, and one-year-old Jez.

“With all the stress this family is going through, we would like to help ease the financial stress they have due to loss of income. Please continue to lift the DeKlyen family up in prayer,” wrote loved one Sonya.

The page is filled with beautiful photos of the entire family looking joyful together; an attitude that is captured in Nick’s latest comments.

While Nick knows that it really is ‘a race against time’ for Carrie and Life, he refuses to let the tragedy of the situation darken his final days with his wife.

He told People magazine: “She’s going to miss us, but she knows life is so quick and we’ll see each other again in Heaven.

“Knowing that gives her hope and, I know it’s crazy, but I support her decision.”
