We are devastated to share the news that nine-year-old Jacob Thompson has passed away. We shared Jacob’s story when he launched his special Christmas card campaign a few weeks ago.

The young boy lost his battle with neuroblastoma after four years on Saturday, November 19.

His family shared the heartbreaking news on his special Facebook page Jacob Thompson’s Journey yesterday afternoon.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Jacob’s passing with you. On Sunday, November 19th, 2017, at just 9 years old, Jacob passed away peacefully following his 4 year battle with neuroblastoma,” they wrote.

The family hope Jacob’s story will raise awareness about the disease, “Neuroblastoma is a rare cancer that most commonly affects children ages five or younger. It is tragic, and more research and resources are needed to continue fighting for a cure.”

They added, “We hope that donations will be made, and a cure will be discovered as a result."

When Jacob was admitted to hospital for the final time he wanted to celebrate Christmas, which was his favourite time of the year. The doctors told him that he would not live to see this Christmas, but the youngster didn’t let that stop him from embracing the festive spirit.

Jacob made one final wish, he asked the public to join his Christmas celebration by sending him handmade Christmas cards.

The young boy received cards from across the globe, “Each and every person who sent Jacob a Christmas card, a gift, a Facebook message or video, or a prayer made a difference in the final days of his life.”

His parents thanked the public for helping make Jacob’s Christmas wish come true, “You brought Jacob joy, and you brought us all optimism for the future. Thank you for taking the time, and taking an interest in our sweet boy’s journey.”

The family thanked the hospital who took care of their son. On October 11, 2017, Jacob was admitted to the children’s hospital for the last time.

“We owe a deep gratitude to the people and organizations who have helped us along the way, including the staff at The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.”

Jacob had been fighting the disease since he was five-years-old. Unfortunately, the cancer spread to his sinuses, bones and skull.

His family have asked the public to make a donation in honour of their late son, “Please donate at Operation Gratitude, to a penguin rescue group, or pay it forward in your community.”

The loss of Jacob is a true tragedy. His parents have encouraged his supporters to be more charitable. “Do something for others, donate blood and platelets, or use your talents to bring shelter, nourishment or joy to those in need in honor of Jacob’s memory.”

“And most importantly, always remember to #LiveLikeAPenguin for Jacob,” they wrote.

We are truly heartbroken to hear of Jacob’s passing. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
