Pregnancy is exhausting so it is no surprise that some mums-to-be like to treat themselves to one or two cups of coffee a day.

However, new research which links caffeine consumption to miscarriage may make women put it away until after Baby is born.

Scientists at the National Institute of Health followed 344 couples from the four weeks before they conceived through to the seventh week of pregnancy, and found that women who drink two caffeinated drinks in the first seven weeks of pregnancy are more likely to suffer from a miscarriage.

The study, which analysed data from the Longitudinal Investigation of Fertility and the Environment Study, looked at the relationship between fertility, lifestyle and exposure to environmental chemicals.

But it's not just during pregnancy that coffee should be avoided.

Experts involved in the study are also warning women, who are trying to conceive, to say goodbye to coffee as well, as consumption before conception can increase the risk of miscarriage.

"Our findings provide useful information for couples who are planning a pregnancy and who would like to minimize their risk for early pregnancy loss," Dr Germaine Buck Louis, director of intramural population health research, told the Express.
