The family of Co. Cork woman, Karen Buckley, who was murdered after a night out in Scotland have released a statement through the Irish Examiner thanking the public for their support following their daughter's horrific death.

Paying tribute to the country in which their daughter chose to embark on a postgraduate course, the 24-year-old's parents said: "We will never forget the huge outpouring of support and sympathy we got when we were in Scotland, it was incredible."

Acknowledging the Scottish public for their help following Karen's disappearance and subsequent discovery, the Buckley family said: "We are very grateful for all the support and messages of sympathy we received from so many people from all over Scotland at this terrible time for our family."

The Buckley family articulated the grief they feel at Karen's tragic passing and honoured the popular young woman who appeared to touch the hearts of many, saying: "We are extremely upset that Karen will never have the chance to live out her life, travel more and pursue her career in occupational therapy."

Revealing their late daughter's hopes for the future, the young woman's parents said: "That maybe someday she could have a family of her own and enjoy a happy and eventful life, which is what she would have wanted."

Admitting that they still struggle to come to terms with Karen's passing in April, the family explained: "We are still in shock and disbelief and it sometimes feels like all of this isn't real."

21-year-old Alexander Pacteau has been charged with the nurses's murder, but made no plea when appearing at Glasgow Sheriff Court.
