An accident on a motorway near Lancaster caused a 30-mile tailback as workers struggled to clear the road. In the resulting nine-hour traffic jam, Shelly Ruck was trapped with eight-month-old baby George.

With only one bottle of formula left, Shelly was panicking about what she could do to feed her hungry baby.

In what is an amazing story of kindness, some good Samaritans came to her rescue. Some people gathered on a bridge over the motorway noticed her distress, and decided to help.

They drove 20 minutes to buy supplies, and using a jerry can, lowered Shelly a box of baby formula, two sterilized bottles filled with boiling water and a bottle of mineral water.

“It was the kindest thing that anyone could have done.” Shelly said.

"It was absolutely unbelievable. They saved us. My baby would have been hungry if it were not for their amazing thoughtfulness and kindness."

The helpful strangers would not accept Shelly’s attempt to reimburse them the £20 spent on the supplies, and she doesn’t even know who it was who came to her aid.

“I don't know who they were, but thank God they were there to help. I want to give them a massive thank you. What they did was unimaginable.”
