We can probably all admit to being a little superstitious at some point in our lives, but some people just can’t relax until their fears of black cats and walking under ladders have been put to rest.

This proved to be the case recently for a Limerick mother, who was irked by the fact that her baby’s PPS number contained the figure ‘666’ – commonly referred to as ‘the number of the beast’, aka ‘the devil’.

The woman, who has not been named, reportedly appealed for her baby’s number to be changed, with Fianna Fáil’s Willie O’Dea presenting her case to Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton.

Unfortunately for the mother, a spokesperson for Mr O’Dea confirmed that her request was rejected, as the Department does not ‘create designer numbers for people’.

Ms Burton today said that all PPS number are allocated at birth and are randomly selected from the numbers available.

The Irish Examiner quoted the Tánaiste as saying: “In general, PPS numbers are only changed where a person’s number has been compromised.”

Would you feel compelled to make the same request if your child received a ‘666’ in their number?
