There is a tendency to get caught up in the more materialistic side of Christmas, given the huge focus on presents and shopping, but one little boy has managed to capture the spirit of the season in a totally different way.

Young Jerry Hatcher has warmed the hearts of social media users this week, after news of his selfless and beautiful Christmas tradition went viral.

Jerry has spent the past three Christmas Days in an Atlanta-based children's healthcare centre, spreading joy by using pocket-money saved up all year to do good deeds for patients and their families.

After spending one Christmas in the centre while his brother battled a serious illness, Jerry discovered the joy of putting a smile on the faces of those around him. The little boy would hide by the cafeteria cash register, then pop up and pay for guests' meals, wishing them a merry Christmas.

It would soon become a tradition for Jerry, who dons a suit on the day and goes down to the centre with a wad of money he has spent all year saving. He continues to surprise cafeteria diners in a bid to cheer up what is often a very difficult day for them.

Jerry was caught in action this Christmas Day, and a member of staff at the hospital shared a photo of him delighting a visitor. As you can imagine, the image - along with the background story - has gone viral, and people all over the world have been touched by Jerry's kindness.

"One thing I'm trying to do is make sure everyone stays happy - it's Christmas!" Jerry told a staff member. Well, he has certainly made an impact on these patients and their families.
