The mother of Madeleine McCann, who went missing while on a family holiday in Portugal eight years ago, is currently taking part in a 500 mile cycle in order to raise awareness and funds for charities such as Missing People and Child Rescue Alert.

Mum-of-three, Kate McCann, is participating in a bike ride which begins in Edinburgh before finishing in London five days later.

The grief stricken mum, who is currently on day three of the route, has asserted that recent developments in her daughter's case has inspired new hope, saying: "Well obviously I can’t give any investigation details out but let’s just say we’re really encouraged. There has been a lot of progress in the last six months plus, last year."

Explaining that links between the UK and Portugal have offered renewed hope to her and her husband, Gerry, the determined mother insisted the case has not stalled, saying: "The co-operation between the UK and the Portuguese seems to be really good which is really positive for us and I can say there is progress being made."

Madeleine, who vanished while on holidays with her parents and younger sibling in 2007, will be at the forefront of her mother's mind as she makes her way southwards by bike towards the final destination.

Telling ITV that her little girl is her main motivation, Kate said: "I’m doing this for Madeleine, I’m doing this for all missing children.”

Wishing Kate and all those participating in the arduous cycle the very best of luck.
