There are few things more shameful than an adult picking on a defenceless young child, and it seems the now notorious Ross Gibson received his comeuppance this week for doing exactly that.

Gibson caused outrage across social media after posting a vile tweet about 11-year-old Jay Beatty, an aspiring and popular footballer with Down syndrome.

Celtic fan Jay was celebrating receiving a ‘goal of the month’ accolade, when Aberdeen fan Gibson took to Twitter to brand the little boy a “disabled piece of s***”.

Perhaps unexpectedly for Gibson, his tweet went viral for all of the wrong reasons, with Twitter users reacting angrily to his shocking abuse. Despite Gibson shutting down his Twitter account amid the backlash, the Scottish police responded to calls for his arrest.

Gibson appeared in Aberdeen’s Sheriff Court this week to face charges, and he admitted to acting in a threatening and abusive manner towards a number of individuals including young Jay.

As punishment for his vile actions, Gibson was ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work and was also banned from attending football matches for a year.

Handing down the punishment, Sheriff David Hall chastised him, saying: “Picking on vulnerable individuals is simply not acceptable."
