You will not get through pregnancy without investing in some new underwear. One of the most common changes to a woman’s body during pregnancy is the almost instantaneous growth of her breasts. So you really should have yourself fitted properly for a few new maternity bras. Aside from needing to address your changing shape, maternity underwear will ensure comfort and support and (as with normal underwear) will make or break an outfit.

Do not wait until your normal bra doesn’t not fit you – you will need the proper support from day one. And no, buying your current style in a bigger size is not the answer, and will definitely be a wasted purchase.

Getting fitted for this professionally is your best option and will help you avoid purchasing the wrong size/fit/style. That said if you think you can do it yourself remember wide straps, back fittings (with 4 fasteners) a full cup to cover the breast entirely (no overspills), no underwire and the band shouldn’t ride up the back. And remember, it should be of breathable material. General rule of thumb is that the lovely lacey ones you find yourself migrating to in the underwear department will not deliver on support so step away please.

If you are measuring yourself, measure your body under the arm; if you are in between sizes, round it up girls. For the cup, measure the fullest part of the bust and ensure tape is flat the whole way round.

At the early stages, just buy two because you will grow and you will have to invest in more as your pregnancy progresses, so you don’t want to blow the budget on your first shopping expedition. Don’t buy big under the belief that you will grow into them - it probably won’t work.

If you’re looking to get a bit of longevity out of a maternity bra, consider a nursing style – it offers the exact same support and fit, and can still be used when baby is born.
