Maura said that she became ill after having a last-minute C-Section to deliver her premature son.
Maura said she wanted to see her newborn son, Cal straight away, but started to vomit soon after the C-Section.
“It was actually 48 hours afterwards, because I was really sick. Because the C-Section was so quick, so raw and so fast.”
The Today presenter said she got upset at being unable to see baby Cal initially.
“I was very ill after that, I was literally knocked out. It was 48 hours before I physically went up to the ICU, but they bought me down to me about a day and a bit later – over a day – just for one second. I thought he was just so cute, and I was roaring crying, it was just so overwhelming. But then when I went up to see him, of course there had to be a bit of drama. I was in a wheelchair because I couldn’t walk, John was pushing me. And I went into the ICU and just threw up – so I had to leave again.”
Maura said she was grateful to recover so quickly, but the whole incident made her realise how hard being a mother really is.
“I don’t think I ever appreciated how hard it is, to be honest. And that’s just one mini-person… it’s very hard. I’ve been lucky that my sisters have been floating about for three weeks, and they were brilliant. It’s no joke, you can’t do anything. You can’t go to the loo because you have to make a bottle. It’s so repetitive and never ending, but it’s so rewarding. I’m so glad I did it, because if I didn’t I think I’d have lost out on so much of my life.”
Maura welcomed Cal into world with her husband, John Deasy on May 12th.
