Actress Mindy Kaling has opened up about becoming a mum for the first time. The 38-year-old is excited about this new chapter but is extremely nervous about this new stage of her life.

She says she has been feeling anxious lately but is looking forward to being a good role model for her baby.

The Mindy Project star would like to be a cool mum, but she doesn’t think she’ll be as hip as she hopes, “I'm gonna be the dorky mom. So, if I could be kind of fun, too, I think that would be nice."

Mindy hopes to follow in her late mum’s footsteps. Her mum passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2012.

The mum-to-be hopes to have a close bond with her baby, just like she did with her mum.

She said, “My mom was incredibly fierce and so devoted to us. She just loved us.”

She hopes to be encouraging of her future child’s life choices, just like her mother was with her. Mindy admits that her mum didn’t know a lot about her career choice, she didn’t know a lot about comedy writing or acting. Mindy revealed, “My career choice was not something that she was familiar with and she was just so supportive of that.”

Mindy’s mum taught her how to be an accepting person, “If I could give that to my child, just that open-mindedness, I’d be so happy.”

The comedian joked about becoming a parent for the first time, “One of the nice things about becoming a parent is that I'll be able to openly criticize other parenting because I will have a child."

Mindy, who has been nominated for numerous awards including an Emmy, has kept the identity of her baby’s father under wraps.

Her co-stars are thrilled about her pregnancy. They recently gushed about Mindy at the PaleyFest Fall TV Preview event.

Co-star Beth Grant, who stars as Beverly on The Mindy Project, expressed her delight for Mindy, “I’m just thrilled out of my mind! I cried like a baby.”

Ed Weeks who plays Dr. Jeremy Reed revealed the touching meaning behind the show. He said the show started as a tribute to Mindy’s mum who passed away shortly before it was picked up, “It ends with her having a daughter of her own.”

He then went on to reveal that the entire cast broke into tears when Mindy reminded them of the true meaning behind the show.

He said, “Life makes some very interesting and beautiful patterns sometimes."

The penultimate series of The Mindy Project is currently streaming on Hulu.
