If you, like thousands of others, were presented with a gift card on Christmas Day this year, then you may be pleased to learn of a potential new law which is due to be implemented by Christmas 2016.

Eager to address the issue of expiry dates on gift vouchers, Minister for Jobs, Richard Burton, intends to introduce new legislation which will ban the implementation of expiry dates on the popular aforementioned gift – a move which will be welcomed by anyone who has had a gift card deemed invalid in the past.

According to the Irish Examiner, the Minister will approach the Cabinet with proposals regarding both gift card legislation and customer protection measures in the not-too-distant future.

Further to this, it has been established that Minister Burton intends to address the issue of digital content and hopes proposed legislation will provide rights to individuals who choose to download and/ or stream digital content.

Will the proposed legislation see a change to your Christmas shopping list next year?
