Just last week, Ben Needham’s mother, Kerry, was told to “prepare for the worst” following claims her son was crushed by a digger on the Greek island of Kos 25 years ago.

An unnamed witness came forward in May of this year, claiming Konstantinos Barkas may have accidently killed the child, and South Yorkshire Police are preparing to search two areas of land where waste had been dumped by the digger driver on Monday.

The area has never been searched before.

Taking to the Help Find Ben Needham Facebook page today, Kerry paid tribute to the police officers who have worked tirelessly oon the case, as they prepare to search the waste land on Monday - a dig that is expected to take 12 days.

“South Yorkshire Police have my full support during this very painful time. These officers have worked tirelessly over the last five years, it's an honour to have such dedicated officers by my side, helping me get through this," the mum wrote.

Ben, was last seen in July 1991 on his grandparent's farm before he went missing; Kerry has always believed her son was still alive, and says she is "petrified" of what police will find.

"They are no longer looking for a missing person. How do I cope with that? Kerry, from Sheffield, told the Mirror following the revelation. “My mother's instinct has always told me he was alive. What if I've been wrong all this time?"

"This feels different now. I'm petrified. I think the police believe they will find Ben's body. I think he's dead."

Konstantinos passed away from the stomach cancer last year.
