A mother from the States has been accused of leaving her 21-year-old son, who is both quadriplegic and suffers from cerebral palsy, to fend for himself in a wooded area in Pennsylvania.

According to reports, Nyia Parler removed her adult son from his wheelchair, laid a blanket over him and placed a bible beside him before departing for Maryland to visit her boyfriend.

The young man was said to have been 'completely defenceless', having been exposed to the elements in an area known for wild animals and limited water supply.

Nyia's son was discovered on Friday night, with Lt John Walker of the Southwest Detectives saying: "It's only by the grace of God that that he survived this. Amazing."

Following his discovery, the young man was taken to hospital where he was treated for dehydration, malnutrition and bodily abrasions, but despite the trauma Nyia's son appears to be improving,

Having been contacted regarding her son's absence from school, Nyia asserted that he was with her while the woman's boyfriend was under the impression her son was being cared for by relatives.

Commenting on the 41-year-old mother's statements, Lt. Walker said: "Obviously her statements made during the week were not truthful."

Nyia Parler is now facing charges of aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, neglect of a care-dependent person, kidnapping, unlawful restraint and false imprisonment.

While currently being treated in hospital for an undisclosed condition Nyia Parler can either waive or fight extradition according to Capt. Paul Stacks of Montgomery County, Maryland.
