Every day, some new report emerges documenting the heroics of our police and emergency service workers, but today’s story is a little different.

The internet has been reduced to a puddle of tears after police officer James Givens shared the story of how a mother goose recently came to him for help, after her baby got into trouble.

Officer Givens, from the Cincinnati Police Department, told The Dodo this week that he was sitting in his patrol car, eating lunch, when the bird approached and started pecking at his car door.

Believing her to be hungry, Officer Givens gave the goose some food, but when she refused it he figured that something was up. His concern was piqued when the goose walked away and looked back, then repeated the actions, so he decided to follow her.

Speaking to the website, Officer Givens described what happened next: "She led me about 100 yards away to this grassy area near a creek. That's when I saw one of her babies all tangled up in some string from a balloon. His little feet were kicking. She led me straight to him."

After sending out a radio alert, Officer Givens got in contact with local animal welfare services. However, with no wildlife rescuers available to help, colleague Cecilia Charron came to his assistance.

With the mother goose watching on, Officer Charron carefully untangled the baby from the string and placed him back with her. The family then swam off together, happily.

As you can imagine, Givens and Charron were left overwhelmed and amazed by the incident, describing it as ‘incredible’.
