A 62-year-old Spanish doctor has made headlines around the world this week, after announcing that she is expecting her third child – 20 years after going through menopause.

Lina Alvarez has hit back at criticism in her native country, insisting that she ‘feels like a woman in her thirties’ and is more than ready to welcome another child.

The expectant mum, who is due to give birth next month, is already mum to a 27-year-old and a 10-year-old.

Local Spanish newspaper EFE reports that Lina’s eldest child has disabilities, and she is hailing her third pregnancy as her ‘reward’ for a ‘life of tears’ with her son.

“I am very happy because I am living now my reward for so much suffering. It is a miracle,” she said.

Lina underwent fertility treatment to conceive, and is reportedly expecting a daughter who is to be named Lina also. The tot is said to be developing well, weighing 4.4lbs a month ahead of her due date.

With Lina’s story hitting the headlines in her native country, she has come in for criticism for being ‘selfish’ and ‘unfair’ to her baby.

In response, Lina insisted: “When she will be 30, I will be 90. I will be a grandmother as well as a mother, and so what? The fact is that my daughter will have been brought up.”
