A US mother has hit back against the ‘judgement’ she has received since the tragic passing of her daughter, who died in a car crash after her grandfather allowed her to take the wheel.

Cadence Orcutt was just eight years old when the vehicle she was travelling in with grandfather Dennis Meers crashed and overturned in an embankment.

The little girl, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, died in the accident. Although police have not yet determined why, it is believed that Meers allowed Cadence to take the steering wheel just before the crash.

Amid devastated responses to the story online, Cadence’s distraught mother Brittany has hit back at judgemental comments about her parenting skills.

“For all the judgemental people saying bad things about me and my parenting skills, there’s one thing you all should know – I am so over-protective of my children. I don’t need anyone’s judgement. I’m blaming myself enough as it is. My heart is dying,” wrote Brittany.

Insisting that she would never have let her daughter take the wheel in such a situation, Brittany shared a word of advice to all those parents reading her post.

“I had so many hopes and dreams for my baby. I just hope that every parent holds their babies extra tight and [realises] how lucky you are that they are in your arms. A piece of my heart died tonight and it’s never coming back,” she added.

While the results of Mr Meers' toxicology reports have yet to be revealed, he is reported to have previously been charged on several occasions for driving under the influence of substances.

Our hearts go out to the family and all affected by this shocking tragedy.
