The retailer denied the claim at the time, stating that CCTV footage of Caroline Starmer showed no evidence of the mother being approached during her time in the store.
Now, in the latest update to the story, it is reported that 28-year-old Ms Starmer has been charged with perverting the course of justice. Ms Starmer has now been summoned to appear at Leicester Magistrates’ court next month.
When asked for comment, a spokesman for Primark told media: “Primark has cooperated fully with police investigators, and will not be commenting further on the ongoing proceedings against Mrs Starmer.”
Meanwhile, a police spokesman confirmed: “Criminal proceedings have now commenced and the defendant has the right to a fair trial.”
Ms Starmer originally shared her version of accounts on Facebook, claiming that she had been breastfeeding quietly in a corner of the store when the security guard approached her. Her story soon went viral, but Primark have denied all claims.
