A mum in the UK who smacked her child’s hand with a wooden spoon is facing charges of child cruelty.

According to reports, the 50-year-old woman carried out the action after her nine-year-old daughter lied about stealing a classmate’s money.

The incident came to the attention of local authorities after the little girl told her school teachers, who went on to report the details.

The mother appeared before Croydon Crown Court this week facing charges of child cruelty, and admitted that she had 'lost her self-control' after finding out her daughter had lied to her.

According to her version of events, the mother found the little girl holding a piggy bank containing a friend’s money. She told the court that she gave her daughter three warnings to stop “scratching the piggy bank”, and then proceeded to give her a “gentle tap” to make her stop.

She added that she noticed a blister on her daughter’s hand after the incident, and she took her downstairs immediately to apply ice to the injury.

However, lawyer for the prosecution Deanne Heer told the court that the daughter “has described 20 or 30” incidents where her mother hit her with the wooden spoon.

The woman is now facing three counts of cruelty to a person under the age of 16, with the trial continuing this week.
