You will no doubt be familiar with the story and plight of Roseann Brennan, the mum who has campaigned tirelessly for lower speed limits in residential areas following the death of her beloved son Jake.

Now, a mum in the UK has issued a similar plea, following her seven-year-old son’s ‘freak’ road traffic accident.

Mum-of-six Mandy Wood has appealed to local government to introduce lower speed limits, after her son Ryan was struck by car’s wing mirror when he popped his head out to check for oncoming traffic.

Ryan was playing with a friend after school when the incident occurred, in Cumbria, last month.

Traumatised mum Mandy recalled: “I wasn’t there when it happened, but his friend came running and told us Ryan was lying in a pool of blood in the road. It was like something out of a nightmare, as Ryan was barely responsive.”

“We are very lucky he hasn’t suffered any brain damage, but as he’s still growing his broken jaw will need monitoring closely over the next few months and years. He also split his chin quite badly and needed stitches – there was blood everywhere,” she added.

Mandy is now campaigning for the speed limit on the road involved to be reduced from 30mph to 20.

“He’s really frightened going near roads now as well, which isn’t surprising. Another boy was badly hurt four months ago so we’ve been lobbying the council to get the speed limit changed, otherwise more accidents will happen. Either that or we would like a zebra crossing in place,” said the 41-year-old.

We’re wishing Ryan all the best with his recovery.
