While our mobile phones may boast a whole host of weird and wonderful functions, the battery life of most devices have yet to last longer than a day, meaning that many of us often chat uninhibitedly on our phones while they're plugged into their chargers.

One woman who has spoken out against this practice was forced to watch her daughter writhe in agony after sustaining second-degree burns following her decision to chat on her phone while it charged in her bedroom.

Speaking to BuzzFeed News, Jackie Fedro from Chicago recalled the moment her 13-year-old daughter Gabbie ran from her bedroom clutching her neck after an electric current travelled from her phone through her necklace and beneath her skin.

"It's the worst feeling in the world as a mother to watch your child scream in pain and have no idea how to help her,” Jackie said. “It took her a good five minutes before she was even able to tell us what had happened."

Revealing the extent of her child's injuries, Jackie explained that in addition to second-degree burns, sports-enthusiast Gabbie will also have a scar all the way around her neck.

Commenting on the teen's injuries, Scott Wolfson of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advised the public to invest in high-quality phone accessories, recommending: "You really shouldn’t go to a mall kiosk for a replacement battery or charger."

While acknowledging the seriousness of Gabbie's burns, Mr. Wolfson did insist that sustaining an electrical charge injury would "be unique" but encourages the public to immediately file a report should one occur.

Determined no other child fall victim to such a harrowing incident, Jackie insists awareness must be raised, saying: "With so many kids using phones now days, parents need to be warned about the harm that they can cause."
