Little gestures can have significant consequences, and this is a message that one mum in the US has sent out on social media this week.

Mum Laura Tennesen-Connerton has heaped praise on her hairdresser, who pulled out all the stops to ensure that her children with special needs were comfortable while getting their hair cut recently.

Posting a shot of Philadelphia-based stylist Julia ‘Jules’ Werder cutting hair while sitting on the floor to The Mighty’s Facebook page, Laura described her as an ‘exceptional human being’ for catering to the needs of her 11-year-old twins, Liam and Madysen.

In a follow-up story on The Mighty’s website, Laura explained that the twins have a rare genetic disorder called Pitt Hopkins Syndrome, and how a trip to the salon can be stressful for her and distressing for them; while Liam often gets nervous, Madysen can end up in tears.

Explaining what happened during this particular visit, however, Laura said: “Something as simple as cutting my daughter’s hair on the salon floor may seem insignificant to many, but made a world of difference to us. She even cut my son’s hair standing by the front windows of the salon, because he loves cars so much.”

Praising Jules for her compassion, Laura finished her Facebook post with a very important and inspiring message: “It’s the little things in life that make all the difference to our special needs loved ones. Thank you, Jules, for recognising that difference.”
