Certain daily rituals are simply habits that we were taught or picked up as we grew up, and washing our hair with delicious-smelling lotions and potions is one of those.

After reading an article about the potentially harmful effects of washing your hair with shampoo and conditioner, one UK mum decided to stamp it out from her and her children’s lives completely.

Lucy Aitken Read, a former self-confessed shampoo addict, gave hair product up over three years ago, and also stopped using shampoo in her eldest daughter’s hair. While it may sound a little strange, the results were surprisingly positive for Lucy and her family.

Lucy, who recently wrote an e-book dedicated to the topic of cutting shampoo out of your life, now only uses water to wash her hair. On days where she feels that she needs a little something extra, she will grab anything from herbs to eggs and apple cider.

As Lucy’s eldest child, Ramona, was only a few months old when she decided to give up shampoo, it made her think about the harmful effects it might be having on her little one, and she now uses the same rituals with her.

As for Lucy’s second child, Juno – she has never had her hair washed with shampoo in her life.

It wasn’t all smooth sailing for Lucy – she admits that her hair was greasy and smelly during the first six months without shampoo, but she insists that, ever since, it has been soft, shiny and healthy.

What are your thoughts? Would you follow suit and ban shampoo in your household?
