If you need a little cheering up today, we can pretty much guarantee that this story is going to put a smile on your face.

An 84-year-old woman has rediscovered the engagement ring she lost 13 years ago – growing around a carrot from her garden!

Mary Grams shared her story with Global News this week, recounting how she originally lost the beautiful ring, back in September 2004.

“I went to the garden for something, and I saw this long weed,” she explained.

“For some reason, I picked it up and it must have caught on something and pulled the ring off.”

The California native added that she was distracted from looking for the ring, after – surprise, surprise – her son Brian came calling for her!

While Mary did return to where she lost the ring, near the potato patch in the field on her land, she never found it. After weeks of searching for the ring proved fruitless, Mary decided to go out and buy a new ring, to throw her husband Norman off the scent!

Last weekend, Mary’s ring came back to her – in the most amazing way.

Son Brian now lives on the land where Mary originally lost the ring, and it was while digging up carrots that his own wife made the discovery.

“My wife was digging carrots for supper, and I guess she came up with a carrot that had something on it,” he explained.

Wrapped around the middle of the carrot was a diamond ring!

“She showed me this carrot and said, ‘Do you know anything about this? I said, ‘I think I do – Mum lost one quite a few years ago,” Brian told Global News.

Brian rang his mother to let her know. They snapped the ring in half, cleaned it up, and it is now sitting on Mary’s ring finger, where it belongs!

It’s especially meaningful to the Edmonton native, as her husband Norman has since passed.

So, what will Mary be doing the next time she wants to partake in a spot of gardening?

“Anything I do outside, I’m going to take it off, and it’s going to stay,” she said.

We’re so glad that such a precious and sentimental item was returned to Mary.
