One mum has sparked a heated online debate after she asked if it was suitable to get her four-year-olds ears pierced.

She explained to the Mumsnet community, “My darling daughter wants her ears pierced because my other daughter has them done and so do I.”

She said her four-year-old feels left out and isn’t satisfied with the clip on earrings she has. She wants real ones instead.

The mum went on to explain that her daughter’s dad does not want her to get her ears pierced, “Her dad is saying no not until she is much older, he sees her once a fortnight and school holidays but is involved.”

She said that when she was in a relationship with her daughter’s dad he had no issue with getting their other daughter’s ears pierced.

“When we were together he was all for our dear daughter getting hers done at 4 years old.”

The mum explained that her daughter has been constantly asking her to get ears pierced for over a year now.

“If she wants them I don’t see the problem, it’s a pair of ear studs, not a nose ring. I’d like to take her in the summer holidays when she is five but he says no.”

Should the mum go against the dad’s wishes?

Most Mumsnet users felt like it would be a bad move, “You should both agree on it.”

“Yeah I wouldn’t go against her father’s wishes,” another added.

“I think doing that to such small children is horrible, so I agree with him that you shouldn't,” one user shared.

“Personally I think pierced ears on a child that young looks common but that’s only my opinion. It should be a joint decision between you and the dad,” one user said.

Should the mum let her daughter pierce her ears without the dad’s approval?
