We have heard of some astonishing birth stories in recent times, and this one takes it to a whole different level.

A family in the US are celebrating this week after Sharista Giles, whom doctors said would never wake from her coma, opened her eyes for the first time.

Sharista was five months pregnant when she was involved in a car accident last December, and had been in a coma ever since.

Doctors were forced to deliver Sharista’s baby prematurely, with the little one – whom the family have not yet named – weighing just two pounds when he was delivered in January.

The Giles family shared the incredible moment that Sharista opened her eyes, describing how she blinked, gave her family members’ hands a squeeze and followed her father with her eyes.

The most emotional moment for all involved came when her dad showed her a photo of her son.

“He showed her a picture of her baby, and she followed the picture. When he turned around to put it back on the bulletin board, she turned her neck – her whole head – trying to follow and find the picture again,” Sharista’s mother Beverly told local media.

The Giles family are now hoping to bring her son to meet her as soon as he is ready to leave the neonatal intensive care unit.

What an incredible story. We wish all the very best to Sharista, her baby and her family.
