I'm just five weeks pregnant and I am worried about everything. What should I be doing to ensure all goes well?

Hi Bridie,

Many thanks for your query. Pregnancy is a wonderful time but for some it can cause anxiety and worry. The most important thing you can do now is eat well and look after yourself and have a healthy lifestyle. It is important for the growing baby that you don't smoke or drink alcohol. You should also be careful not to eat any soft cheeses or undercooked meats as food poisoning can be dangerous both for you and the baby.

In an ideal world you would be doing all these things all the time, whether pregnant or not. You should be taking folic acid supplements, and if you feel you need any other supplements you should discuss it with your doctor. You should avoid medication when pregnant, unless prescribed for you.

The vast majority of pregnancies are normal and uneventful - it is important to remember that. You should attend all your antenatal appointments both with your GP and your hospital team, to ensure all is going well.

Congratulations!
