Experiencing heartburn is pretty common throughout pregnancy; However, while some mums suffer only mildly with it, others can experience it pretty severely. Thankfully, there are natural ways to help beat the discomfort, some of which you might never have thought of.

Almonds
Simply eating a handful of almond nuts should help to ease the burning sensation. Their high oil content helps to neutralise the stomach acid causing you pain.

Apples and celery
Just like the almonds, apples and celery can help to neutralise the acid. Simply munch on an apple or nibble on a celery stick when you feel the discomfort starting.

Liquorice
Liquorice is pretty good for easing heartburn; however, it can cause high blood pressure if you eat high quantities of it so only use it if you have nothing else.

Chewing gum
Carry around a packet of chewing gum for when you are out and about. Pick up a peppermint sugar-free flavour to clear the acid quickly.

Buttermilk
Drinking a glass of buttermilk can help relieve indigestion and heartburn pain fairly quickly.

Milk
If you are not a fan of buttermilk, normal milk does the same job in neutralising the acid although it does take a bit longer to feel the effects.

Garlic
While you might want to avoid this if you are meeting people, chewing a clove of garlic can help. Not everyone can stomach raw garlic so only use it if you have nothing else.

Ginger
Ginger is great for when your stomach is feeling nauseous. Simply drink in a tea or suck on ginger sweets if you have them.

Peppermint
Peppermint, either on its own or mixed with water, can help to relieve discomfort. It is widely available and you can pick up peppermint oil fairly easily.

Water
For some mums, simply drinking water can help to wash away the acid. However, you should only take small sips or it could make you feel worse.

Fennel seeds
Slowly chewing on fennel seeds after a meal can help to prevent it happening in the first place.

If you are suffering from heartburn particularly badly, you should talk to your doctor who may be able to give you something a little stronger.
