A new law aimed to ensure child safety in cars has been passed in Northern Ireland today.

The i-Size system which allows car seats be secured to anchor parts in the car is, according to the BBC, expected to come into force on Monday, 20th April.

The new system will mean the seat will remain in place throughout the entire journey without the need to use an adult seat belt.

According to the Department of the Environment, the car seat will be plugged or clicked into points in the car.

The new law is targeted at children aged between birth and 15 months with old seats eventually being phased out by 2018. It is still acceptable to use your current EU approved car seat until then, and more than likely beyond for a few years.

And while the new legislation will mean parents can be reassured that their kids are safe in the car, Environment Minister Mark Durkan, said: "Ultimately however, all of us using the road must take personal responsibility for our attitudes and behaviours on the roads," he said.

"We must wear a seatbelt on every journey and ensure that our children use a suitable car seat."
