Just yesterday, we shared a report of amazing community spirit and generosity, and today we have yet another incredible story for you.

Neighbours in a Sydney suburb have come in for high praise this morning, after saving the lives of a newborn and a toddler caught up in an apartment fire.

According to reports, the kids’ mother was cooking in her kitchen on Thursday evening when the blaze broke out. Soon, the flames had spread so far that they blocked off her front door and even spread to neighbouring apartments.

Luckily, neighbours had spotted the billowing smoke and pulled mattresses out to the ground beneath the second-floor window.

The mother proceeded to throw her children – one of whom was only two days old at the time – out of the window and into the arms of members of the awaiting crowd below.

Meanwhile, the 27-year-old mother sat on the windowsill until emergency services arrived to help her down.

Thankfully, the children were unharmed, while the woman was brought to hospital for smoke inhalation, burns and cuts to her feet. A number of the building's occupants were also treated for smoke inhalation, while the apartment block itself was evacuated.

Hailing the neighbours as heroes, a member of the authorities told local media: “This could have been a horrific tragedy. Neighbours did a fantastic job, putting mattresses on the floor and catching the baby. It was a really good support network from the neighbours.”

Well done to the wonderful people who came to this family’s aid.
