We are constantly being told to ensure our children are as protected as possible in the hot weather, but sometimes, freak accidents can occur.

This was the case for one family in Phoenix, Arizona recently, when boiling water from a garden hose inflicted second-degree burns on their nine-month-old tot.

According to a report by local news station KNVX, mum Dominique Woodger had no idea that the water in the hose – which had been left out in the sun – had soaked in the 115 degree (about 37 Celsius) heat of the day.

Dominique then turned on the hose to fill the paddling pool and couldn’t understand why, when little Nicholas got hit with the hot spray, he began crying.

“I thought he was crying because he was mad … he hates when he gets sprayed in the face. I didn’t think that it was burning him,” she explained.

However, it didn’t take long for her to realise that something was seriously wrong, when his skin began peeling and blistering.

The tot endured second-degree burns to over 30% of his body, and is now recovering at home following a stint in hospital.

A devastated Dominique went on to urge other parents to ‘be careful’ if they are using a hose in intense heat this summer, and advised them to touch the water before letting kids anywhere near it.

We’re wishing poor Nicholas a speedy recovery.
