No matter how well-publicised an issue is, mistakes are still made, and the death of a toddler in the US has given rise to one of the most alarming and devastating statistics this week.

An 11-month-old boy has become the nineteenth child in the US to die this year because of being left inside of a hot car.

Little Jaxon Taylor was spending the day with his grandparents, Kyle and Meta Hendershot, when the incident occurred. According to reports, the Hendershots were taking Jaxon for the day to allow his mother – who works a night shift as a nurse – to sleep.

The Hendershots are said to have brought Jaxon to church along with one of their daughters and another grandchild, but they forgot about the tot when they arrived home. It was only when Jaxon’s mother inquired about her son that the Hendershots realised what had happened.

According to local reports, temperatures had risen to more than 90F during the time that the child was stuck inside of the car.

Investigating officer Sherriff Steve Wilson said: “In those conditions, the temperature in a closed vehicle can reach as high as 131 to 172 degrees in as little as 15 minutes”.

Little Jaxon was rushed to hospital immediately after his grandparents realised their mistake, but the tot was pronounced dead upon arrival.

No charges have been filed against the couple, but an investigation is reportedly taking place.
