Opinion was split when her story made international headlines, with many sympathising while others pointed the finger, but this mum’s case has finally been put to bed.

Prosecutors in the US have decided not to bring any charges against Cherish Peterson; the mother who left her two-month-old baby in a shopping trolley outside of a supermarket.

The 27-year-old found herself at the centre of controversy after local media reported on the incident. Cherish had allegedly forgotten that her child was in the trolley and driven away from the supermarket, leaving the tot alone.

Employees at a local hair salon spotted the baby and brought him inside, proceeding to contact the police to report the incident.

Forty minutes later, Cherish realised her error and drove back to the spot to look for her child. The mother-of-four was reunited with her baby shortly after, but a misdemeanour charge of child endangerment was brought against her.

After giving a public and emotionally-charged interview on national TV, insisting that what happened was a terrible mistake, Cherish saw the charges against her dropped this week. The decision was reportedly made after careful consideration of the facts by local town prosecutors.
