More than half of parents admit they don’t feel very confident fitting child seats in the car.

The new research carried out by Liberty Insurance also found that 28% of parents were unaware that children under 12 were required to have a booster seat or cushion when travelling in a car.

When it came to ensuring good behaviour from children when driving, 35% of parents say they have games on hand to distract their kids during journeys, while more than a quarter of mums and dads admit resorting to bribery.

As the Halloween Bank Holiday approaches, Liberty’s Annette Ni Dhathlaoi is urging drivers to be vigilant, as there is traditionally an increase in the number of road accidents over long weekends.

“The bank holiday weekend means more drivers doing longer distances and often travelling on unfamiliar roads with multiple passengers. It’s apparent from the research that there is a need to fully understand and implement the guidelines in relation to child safety and adult passengers,” she said.

Irish drivers with children can download a free Child Car Safety booklet in association with Liberty Insurance on the MummyPages Safety Centre which contains everything you should know about travelling with children.
